Nexus 7 Tablet and NFC

Author: Mark Page Posted: 2012-07-23

While playing around with the Nexus 7 tablet, I decided to try out a NFC tag to see what can be done with it. NFC or Near Field Communication is a little like a QR Code where a mobile device can use it's camera to read a link or information. NFC tags take is a little further in that the tags are actually little storage devices that can store commands and files. These can then be used by the device to do something. To try it out just hold your mobile device up against an NFC tag or another NFC device such as cell phone or tablet. The NFC tags get there power from the actual device wirelessly. It's pretty cool and it could open the door for all kinds of learning experiences.

Have students share information using NFC tags to accomplish a task is a thought. Unlike QR codes, you don't need an Internet connection as files can be passed or commands such as opening any application not just a web browser. Opening a Movie or photo application then displaying something comes to mind.

Using NFC to help bring down classroom walls is exciting and opens up many more doors. Now it's time to create!

NFC Tags are small little stickers. They can be reused and reprogrammed.
